Go From Civilian to Sailor
Your first assignment as a Navy Reserve Enlistee is to attend Recruit Training in Great Lakes, Illinois. Transforming you from a civilian to a Sailor, this nine-week course will bring out the very best in you, both mentally and physically.
Variety of Training
Both classroom and practical applications are provided during your training. The training philosophy here is fast-paced and high-energy. You will receive a great amount of information and undergo intense physical exercise in a short period of time.
Build Up Your Body
You will participate in physical training (PT) each morning comprised of aerobic or strength and conditioning exercises. Be prepared to complete a baseline Physical Readiness Test (PRT) at the beginning and end of your training. At the completion of the course, you will be given a Personal Fitness Assessment (PFA) to determine your fitness level.
Get a Head Start
A strength-training program beginning at least six months prior is suggested. This will provide you with the physical strength and also the mental toughness to enter Recruit Training with confidence. Suggested daily exercises include a combination of the following:
Aerobic Training
Walking, jogging, rollerblading or swimming
Exercises
Crunches (lie on back with knees flexed, arms folded across chest, raise upper body), pull-ups and push-ups
Candidates should stretch prior to working out and drink extra fluids before and after exercising.
Sharpen Your Mind
You'll be given classroom instruction focusing on military bearing, protocol, customs and courtesies. To pass, you must satisfactorily complete qualitative and/or quantitative tests on what you have learned. You must also memorize and recite from memory the
11 General Orders of a Sentry, the
Sailor's Creed and
"Anchors Aweigh"
at various times during your training.
Specific training includes:
Candidates must also pass the Navy Third-Class Swim Test.
Medical, Law Enforcement and Construction
Recent high school graduates who are entering the Navy Reserve as Hospital Corpsmen, Masters-at-Arms (law enforcement) or Seabees (Construction Battalion) must complete the standard eight-week Navy Recruit Training program. Contact a Navy Reserve Recruiter for more information.
